About the Author
Robert l. Dingman, Ed.D, LPC (WV), CCMHC, NCC, is Professor Emeritus at Marshall University, having retired in 1996 after twenty-eight years teaching in the counseling department. He was also in private practice as a counselor for twenty-six years.

He has served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross since 1981 and has been instrumental in the development of their disaster mental health services program. He has served in more than seventy disasters all over the United States and has taught many, many classes related to disaster mental health. Among the many disasters in which he has served are Hurricanes Hugo, Andrew, Hortense, and Georges; the great Mississippi floods; Alaska Airlines crash; and the 9=11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. He is the author of dozens of articles in professional newsletters and journals.

He also served as associate editor of the Mental Health Counseling Journal and as special issue editor of the Mental Health Counseling Journal titled "Disasters and Crises:

A Mental Health Counseling Perspective," and as editor of a monograph titled Licensure for Mental Health Counselors.

Dr. Dingman has been very active in the professional organizations related to counseling on the local, state, regional, and national levels. He served as chairperŽson for ACA`s Public Awareness and Support Committee, President of the American Association of State Counseling Boards, and a founding member of the West Virginia Counselor Licensure Board.

For his years of service to the profession, he has received many awards. Among them are Counselor of the Year, Counselor Educator of the Year, and Services to the Counseling Profession from the West Virginia Counselors AssociaŽtion; Counselor Educator of the Year and Researcher of the Year from the American Mental Health Counselors Association; the Gilbert & Kathleen Wrenn HumanitarŽian and Caripg Person Award from the American Counseling Association; and the Distinguished Service Award from Marshall University.
