I am extremely delighted to learn that the book entitled ?An Army Officer-in the making? written by Dr. Ashwani Sharma is being published. My association with Dr. Sharma goes back to past 10 years when I landed in Karnal after my retirement from the Army. He approached me and asked for guidance of his son Akshay Ashwani who had to appear for the NDA interview.

The combination of Akshay and Ashwani itself was peculiar name for me as I did not come across such a name in the past. True to the unique personality of his father, I could see such sterling qualities in young Akshay and at the very 1st meeting I was very certain of his entry in the NDA having been the Deputy President of Service Selection Board at Allahabad for three years and trained GTO as well. On the very 1st day I told him that I am going to give him a Sanskrit shaloka and asked him if he knew Sanskrit. He was quite taken aback but I put him at ease and told him that the shaloka in English is as under:-

I shall always be confident of myself and my capabilities. My approach will be win-win and come what may, I shall always be successful?.

Through my experience I feel confidence is most vital for success in life and I told him that he must remember it by heart and speak loudly in front of a mirror if possible 3-4 times after getting up in the morning and before sleeping at night. Thereafter, I guided him about the various aspects of testing system to evaluate the personality of an individual in the Service Selection Board. I advised him that as he uses spectacles, he should not opt for the PABT test and instead opt for the Army. While undergoing testing in the SSB he would ring me up in the evening and I would encourage him and tell him that even if one individual gets selected, he shall be the one.

Akshay had met me before going to join NDA. I had briefed him in detail and told him that hard work, sincerity, high value systems, integrity, discipline, dedication and commitment, will power, leadership qualities, patriotism, mental and physical courage, conviction are the hall marks of an individuals personality. While in the NDA besides academic excellence, one develops above qualities. It is a premier institution and pride of our nation. It fosters camaraderie, esprit-de-corps and builds life long relationships that become a source of strength in future career.

The contribution and sacrifices made by alumini of officers having passed out from NDA and IMA is unparalleled. The acts of bravery and heroism displayed in the defence of our nation be it the high seas, in the Air or on ground, during various operations, natural calamities, overseas assignments and operations against terrorists are praise worthy and envy of one and all. I have no doubt Akshay will measure up to the high expectations and prove 2nd to none in all his future endeavours.

The graphical detailed account of activities, chores challenges, faced by young cadets during training, their grooming and pursuit of perfection and excellence in the NDA and IMA is indeed laudable.

Dr. Ashwani Sharma has made a singular unique effort in highlighting the various aspects that go into in the making of an Army officer. I have no doubt the book will prove a boon to inspire the youth of our nation and motivate them to opt for a career in the armed forces. Poems e.g. My Decision, Golden Chance, Sole Aim, Best Lion, War, Gift, For You Maa, Rovers etc. written by young Akshay are really befitting and touching. The book is true tribute to all ranks of the Indian Army who laid down their lives in the defence of the motherland. Dr Ashwani Sharma indeed deserves all the accolades, appreciation and congratulations for his noble venture. I have no doubt that the book will find a place of pride in the library of educational institutions.
