It is with a great deal of anticipation and excitement that we release the second edition of Guide to ECG Analysis. The tremendous success of the first edition is a strong indicator that the content and format of this text are meeting the needs of individuals who want to master the skills of analyzing and interpreting ECG dysrhythmias.
The second edition of Guide to ECG Analysis follows the format and presentation of the first edition. It is still this authors strong belief that when students attempt to learn ECG analysis, they must start at the beginning with very basic information and then proceed step-by-step into an understanding of the more complex concepts and analysis skills. This text provides the building blocks for a systematic understanding of the basic knowledge required to attain these skills. The text does not require the student to have any extensive previous knowledge of health care or cardiac problems. It has been used successfully with nursing students, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and even medical students.
We have been listening to our readers and reviewers, and the changes that have been made in the second edition reflect their input. The section on the anatomy and physiology of the heart has been expanded. Under the treatment sections of the chapters, the new antidysrhythmia medications have been included. However, what we discovered as we researched treatment is that the older medications are still extensively used, and that some of the newer medications tend to be used more in one geographic region than in another. Always check what dysrhythmia treatment procols are being used in your facility before administering any particular medication.
We still strongly believe that practice makes perfect when attempting to learn a complex skill such as ECG analysis. To this end, over 50 new practice ECG strips have been added to the book, about half to the chapters and half to the General Practice Strips near the end of the book. We have also added ECG Review Sheets as the last section in the book. This new section provides the reader with a quick reference to a sample dysrhythmia strip and the criteria all on one page.
If you are serious about mastering the skills for ECG analysis and interpretation, this text will provide you with a step-by-step process you can use. It does require some study and memory of the criteria, but we believe the logical presentation and clear explanations in the text make this task easier. The text can be used either as a stand-alone, self-study workbook, or in conjunction with a classroom instructor.
