PREFACE

The light metals (aluminum, magnesium and titanium) are important for many applications, but are most critical for transportation where weight savings results in a plethora of benefits including reduced fuel consumption, higher speed and longer range, improved performance/handleability, etc. This applies whether we are dealing with automobiles, airplanes, space vehicles, bicycles or even submarines - witness the titanium alpha class submarine in "Hunt for Red October". Thus, it was timely to have this Conference, organized by the Engineering Society, concentrating on the light metals in the beautiful setting of rustic Tuscany. Experts gathered from both sides of the Atlantic, and both sides of the former iron curtain to present the results of their work at the II Ciocco Conference Center, in Castelvecchio Pascoli (near Barga, Italy). These proceedings, which are the written versions of the oral presentations, are divided into three sections, titanium alloys, aluminum alloys and composites and magnesium alloys. They represent cutting edge studies.

As the organizers of the Conference, we would like to thank all the participants for their active involvement in the Conference. We would also like to thank the Engineering Society for sponsoring the event, especially Rosa Landinez for her organizational support, and Dr. N. Stoloff, the technical contact point. We look forward to a second Conference in this series in the future.
